Pioneer PLX-CRSS12's DJ Turntables, let us first understand that, what sets this turntable apart from others on the market.
It happened! Pioneer DJ (also known as AlphaTheta) has finally released the PLX-CRSS12 after much anticipation, fan-made designs, and hopeful expectations. The DJ community was taken by surprise, and both turntablists and hip-hop DJs were thrilled. At last, a turntable has been introduced that can play vinyl with integrated DVS control, can play timecode vinyl, with or without the needles, without using PHASE, or any commercially available mods. The burning question now is: does this worth approx. ₹1,18,000 and would this be any good for the Indian Djing Industry?
Let's discover.
The mechanism idea behind the Pioneer Pioneer PLX-CRSS12
Essentially, the turntable relies on the familiar locking spindle mechanism for digital transport control, a technology that has been in use since the 2000s. This technology is also present in the Rane Twelves and One, and has origins dating back to the Denon DN-S5000 in 2002.
Pioneer DJ stands out for its innovative approach to the locking mechanism. While other companies typically rely on adapters that must be bolted onto specific vinyl plates, most of which require screws for connection (and later, a quick-release adapter), Pioneer DJ has introduced the Magvel Clamp as a unique solution with the Pioneer PLX-CRSS12 Turntables.
The Magvel Clamp
The Magvel Clamp functions like a vinyl weight and is utilized to secure the record to the spindle, enabling transport control in Serato or Rekordbox. This means you can use any record, or even the slipmat, to manipulate your timecode. A standout aspect of the Magvel Clamp is the capability to modify the tension of the clamp, giving you the flexibility to adjust the slipperiness of the record on the platter. Turning it to the right increases tension with tight platter rotations and while turning it to the left decreases tension, allowing the platter to rotate freely.
I am confident that scratching with the slipmat will become the latest trend on this turntable, similar to how DJs scratch with the record off the player using the Phase. But in this you dont need to charge the Magvel Clamp as like you do with Phase. The Magvel Clamp is non chargeable. AWESOME!
Now we have a device that functions as a conventional turntable weight, allowing us to adjust the tension/weight based on the turntabilist's needs. It operates as a timecode device that does not require charging and does not need timecode vinyls, compatible with both Serato and Rekordbox. Doesn't that sound like an amazing future!
The Design
With all components positioned as expected, the Pioneer PLX-CRSS12 adheres to the standard layout, featuring elements like the tonearm, pitch fader with ultrapitch, start/stop button, and tonearm adjustments. The only deviation from the traditional controls is the 33/45 buttons, which are designed with a battle style print for a unique touch.
The Controls
The extra controls are discreetly positioned and not overly obtrusive. The primary performance controls are situated on the lower left side (in battle mode), reminiscent of the old Novation Dicers. The four primary buttons serve different functions: Hot Cues, Stems, Sampler, and Scratch Bank. Two buttons determine the active page, enabling you to switch between two pages. A Shift button provides access to two more custom mappable control pages.
The rest of the controls provide access to utility features on the turntable, such as a button for switching between vinyl and timecode mode, another button for selecting the software deck to control in your software like DDJs or XDJs, and an Application button that changes the timecode signal from Serato to Rekordbox. These controls are displayed on a small OLED screen positioned under the tone arm when the turntable is placed in the cradle. While most users will probably only adjust these controls once, it is not a significant drawback.
Moreover, by long-pressing the Deck button, you can open the Utility screen, which allows you to customise various features such as the deck Torque (low, medium, or high), LCD brightness, deck standby activation, and factory reset option.
The Step Pitch Feature
Introducing Step Pitch, a new feature that enables you to modify the pitch of the record by semitones using the pitch fader. Although I anticipate that some innovative turntablists will discover unique applications for this function, I personally did not notice a significant distinction compared to simply adjusting the pitch.
Build Quality
The Pioneer PLX-CRSS12 turntables utilises a customised Hanpin Super OEM foundation, renowned for its enduring dependability in the field. The Pioneer PLX-CRSS12 turntables has a fantastic construction, with a high-quality plastic casing and a metal top faceplate. It weighs almost 12.247 Kg, which is typical for most Super OEM decks, which contributes to the turntable feeling solid and high-end. The deck does not give the impression of being cheap or unreliable. It is a well-crafted product that exudes quality engineering and manufacturing. The track record of Hanpin engineering and manufacturing has been solidly established.
Connections
Aside from the usual RCA ports, Pioneer DJ has chosen once more to keep a distinct grounding cable instead of grounding the deck internally like many contemporary alternatives. The grounding cable is detachable and can be replaced, unlike older Technics models that necessitate opening up the deck to replace the grounding wire.
When it comes to connecting to a PC, Pioneer DJ is actively promoting the adoption of USB-C as the new standard for USB connections.
The timecode signal is output at phono level, removing the necessity to make any adjustments on your mixer or controller when transitioning between timecode and vinyl.
Software Compatibility - rekordbox & Serato DJ Pro
The Pioneer PLX-CRSS12 Turntables support both Serato and Rekordbox by offering both types of timecode signal. Although Serato remains the top choice for DVS DJs, the availability of Rekordbox is a valuable inclusion.

The Price - ₹2,36,000* [Pair]
Similar to many other products by Pioneer DJ, the issue lies in its expensive price tag. ₹2,36,000 is a staggering amount to spend on a pair of turntables, regardless of their advanced features or aesthetic appeal. Pioneer DJ has positioned the PLX-CRSS12 as a luxury product, and that is precisely what it is. It is a premium turntable that offers one of the finest DJing experiences available today. While a Toyota can perform the same function at a lower cost, just like how not everyone needs a Mercedes, the allure and additional features of the Mercedes make it a more attractive option.
Who is it for?
It is evident that this product is designed specifically for turntablists, hip-hop, and open format DJs, as well as for DJs who utilise DVS but also desire to incorporate vinyl into their performances.
Is it necessary to purchase the Pioneer CRSS12 Turntables, especially if you already have turntables and Phase? No, it is not. Spending ₹1,18,000 on a single turntable that primarily focuses on convenience is not essential for anyone.
Are you interested in acquiring the CRSS12? Undoubtedly, you are. This exquisite deck not only enhances any setup but also stands out as a unique and elegant centrepiece.
Whether you have the financial means or require the top-of-the-line and most advanced turntable option available, you will definitely want to acquire the PLX-CRSS12.
For DJs looking to future-proof their setup, the PLX-CRSS12 offers unmatched flexibility and performance. Whether you're transitioning from vinyl to digital or seeking a versatile addition to your rig, this turntable provides the tools needed to stay ahead in the ever-evolving world of DJing. But off-course if only you have extra bucks :-)
Performance Review
The PLX-CRSS12 impresses with its robust build quality and intuitive design. The turntable offers a highly responsive platter with minimal latency, crucial for precise scratching and mixing. The sound quality is exceptional, thanks to its high-grade components that minimise distortion and ensure clear audio playback.
One of the standout features is its integration with DVS, which allows DJs to use timecode vinyl to control digital tracks with the same tactile feedback as traditional vinyl. This hybrid functionality makes it an ideal choice for DJs who want the best of both worlds.
Conclusion
The Pioneer DJ PLX-CRSS12 sets a new standard for hybrid turntables, combining the tactile pleasure of vinyl with the convenience and power of digital DJing. Its high-torque motor, performance pads, and DVS compatibility make it a versatile and reliable choice for both professional and aspiring DJs.
At DJ Training Academy, we highly recommend the PLX-CRSS12 for its innovative features and superior performance. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting your DJ journey, this turntable is designed to enhance your skills and inspire your creativity.
ALTERNATE SUGGESTION - If you want to spend less then there are more options available along with the PHASE. For example a pair of Numark or Audio Techinca or Reloop along with the PHASE would cost you much cheaper than a pair of Pioneer DJ PLX-CRSS12
