After years of effort leading up to this moment, AIAIAI is excited to reveal that the TMA-2 DJ Wireless is now available. This journey aimed to offer wireless freedom to DJs while maintaining crucial performance elements—ultra-low latency, superior sound quality, and durability. They are pleased to announce their success. Now, one can perform with the accuracy of a wired connection—without the cable.
DJ headphones typically still rely on cables. The reason is that standard, the Bluetooth technology isn't quick enough for real-time cueing or mixing. Traditionally, if you wanted to move freely around the DJ booth or manage a tight B2B handover, you were usually connected to the mixer by a wire.
However, new technology is emerging that promises to liberate us from cables with a wireless connection that's nearly instantaneous. We've already seen a similar advancement with the AlphaTheta HDJ-F10, and now there's a new contender for the top wireless DJ headphones.
The new AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ Wireless headphones are based on the popular TMA-2 modular design frequently seen on DJs. They now feature a new ultra-low latency W+ link that ensures super-fast connections. So, do these new headphones make wireless DJing more accessible and practical, or is it still too niche to be significant? LET's CHECK OUT
Design and Construct

The new headphones embody AIAIAI's signature design, featuring a modular system present in all their models. This allows you to interchange and replace components such as the speaker units, headband, earpads, and cable. If any part breaks or you wish to upgrade or modify them later, there's no need to purchase an entirely new set. This approach reflects AIAIAI's commitment to environmentally friendly design, as all products are crafted with sustainability in mind, utilizing recycled and responsibly sourced materials whenever possible.
Regarding build quality, these headphones feel premium, as expected from AIAIAI. The matte black plastic used throughout is pleasant to the touch and visually appealing. The headphones are robust and well-constructed, giving us confidence in their durability against the rigors of DJing, including being tossed into a bag with other equipment.
The headphones are also comfortable for extended wear. They are relatively lightweight at 217g, fitting nicely on the head, with a clamping force that secures them without excessive pressure. Included are on-ear memory foam earpads with vegan leather, providing the right firmness for a comfortable fit and a good seal to block external noise. If you prefer different earpads, such as over-ear options, AIAIAI offers alternatives that can be easily swapped.
We personally feel that the ear cups don't fold like the SENNHEISER HD 25 Plus or Technics EAH DJ1200. Some DJs prefer to fold one cup upwards towards their ear for a more comfortable fit while performing. Additionally, these ear cups take up more storage space compared to some other DJ headphones, don't they?
Whats in the Box?

The headphones come with a 1.5m straight cable, the W+ Wireless transmitter, a USB charging cable, a short audio cable for the transmitter, two 1/4 inch adapters, and a carrying case.
Sound Quality

The new TMA-2 DJ wireless headphones continue to emphasize bass in their sound signature, but they manage to avoid becoming overpowering. The kicks and basses have plenty of thump and punch, delivering a satisfying and enjoyable low-end experience without being overwhelming or tiring.
These headphones are specifically crafted for DJs, providing the necessary volume and punch to hear and cue tracks in a bustling club environment. The isolation is also quite effective, capable of blocking out most ambient noise even in a loud setting.
However, while there is a significant amount of bass, it doesn’t always capture the finer details in more complex low-end material. This is generally true for the rest of the sound as well. The detail and separation are adequate but not exceptional, and if you’re considering using these for tasks like music production, there are better options available at this price range.
AIAIAI also offers the ability to customize the sound of these headphones with a companion app. This app allows you to adjust a 5-band EQ to tailor the sound profile to your preferences, so if you desire more or less bass, for instance, you can easily modify it there.
Connectivity & Wireless Performance

While these headphones emphasize the advanced new wireless connection, they also function as conventional wired headphones. They come with a 1.5m straight cable and a screw-on 1/4 to 1/8 inch adapter, which feels of high quality.
You can also connect them via a standard Bluetooth connection, much like a typical everyday pair of headphones. This is ideal if you intend to use them for casual listening or travel, though they lack active noise cancellation and an in-built mic—features commonly expected in everyday headphones.
The standout feature of these headphones is the W+ wireless connection. AIAIAI guarantees ultra-low latency of under 10ms, meaning there’s an imperceptibly short delay between interacting with the decks and hearing the sound through the headphones. Additionally, the audio remains uncompressed over this wireless connection, unlike most Bluetooth connections, ensuring pristine sound quality.
The W+ connection operates with a separate unit included in the package. This small box connects easily to the headphones—just press the button on both devices, and you're set. The box then connects via a cable to your audio source. Like the headphones, the unit charges with the provided USB C cable. AIAIAI claims over 20 hours of battery life on the W+ connection, sufficient for any DJ set.

This incredibly fast connection might seem too good to be true for those accustomed to the noticeable lag of Bluetooth. However, after testing, there’s no perceivable difference in feel and response compared to a traditional wired connection. In a blind test, no one would be able to tell the difference.
The only minor issue encountered is a slight background noise when the W+ unit is connected, even with no audio playing. It’s quite faint and unlikely to be noticed when music is playing or in a loud environment, but it's worth mentioning—especially since you might use other connection types for casual listening where this noise could be more noticeable.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Is it possible to DJ wirelessly using the TMA-2 DJ Wireless? - Yes, the W+ Link connection provides ultra-low latency (less than 10ms) and uncompressed audio, making it ideal for real-time cueing and mixing.
Does the TMA-2 Wireless support Bluetooth? - Yes, it features Bluetooth for casual listening. However, the latency is too high for DJing. For performance use, W+ Link is recommended.
Is there any delay when using the W+ wireless mode? - The latency is less than 10ms, making it imperceptible, even during mixing. In tests, it feels comparable to a wired connection.
What is the battery life? - You will have more than 20 hours of battery life in W+ mode or when using Bluetooth.
What makes these headphones modular, and which parts are interchangeable? - Every component, such as the headband, speaker units, earpads, and cables, can be replaced or upgraded. If a part breaks, you only need to replace that specific piece.
Are the TMA-2 DJ Wireless Headphones suitable for music production? - They perform well for DJing, but the sound profile leans towards bass emphasis and offers average detail. For more serious production work, you might prefer a more neutral option, such as those available in their Studio Range.
AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ Wireless compared to AlphaTheta HDJ-F10
The market for wireless DJ headphones remains quite niche, and even with this new model joining the fray, there are still just two models available – the only other choice is the recently launched Alphatheta HDJ-F10.
The HDJ-F10 delivers a sound with a stronger bass emphasis. Some might appreciate this feature, and it can be useful for cueing tracks while mixing, but for everyday listening, it may become tiring. Regarding detail and overall sound quality across the frequency range, the HDJ-F10s likely have a slight advantage due to better instrument separation and resolution.
The wireless technology in both models functions similarly, with each having a separate unit that connects via a wire to your DJ equipment, offering an imperceptible delay and approximately 20 hours of battery life.
When it comes to design and construction, it largely depends on personal preference, as both are evidently well-crafted. The HDJ-F10 are larger over-ear models, providing better isolation, whereas the AIAIAIs are smaller, lighter on-ear designs with the added benefit of being modular, allowing for part replacement.
The most significant difference between the two is the price. The AIAIAIs are priced at £250/$299, while the AlphaThetas cost £469/$499. Given how similar they are in performance, this represents a substantial price increase that many DJs may find difficult to justify.
Final Thoughts
The AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ Wireless headphones are priced at £250/$299, placing them firmly in the higher-end range for DJ headphones. This pricing reflects the advanced technology and features that these headphones offer, catering to professional DJs and serious enthusiasts who are willing to invest in quality audio gear. The wireless functionality, combined with the brand's reputation for high-fidelity sound and durability, makes these headphones a noteworthy option for those who prioritise performance and convenience in their setups.
Deciding whether to choose these headphones largely depends on your interest in wireless technology for DJing. While they are undeniably impressive in terms of sound quality and design, they cater to what is likely a niche market at present. For DJs who frequently perform in cramped spaces or engage in back-to-back sets, the wireless capability can be a game changer. It allows for greater freedom of movement, enabling you to navigate your booth without being tethered by cables. This can also be advantageous during energetic performances, where mobility can enhance your overall stage presence and interaction with the audience. However, it is important to note that not every DJ may find these features necessary, especially those who are accustomed to traditional wired setups and may prefer the reliability that comes with them.
If you already own a pair of TMA-2 DJ headphones, there's no need to purchase a completely new set. AIAIAI offers the option to buy just the wireless receiver and speaker units, allowing you to upgrade to wireless for £125. This approach provides a cost-effective solution for existing users who wish to enhance their audio experience without the financial burden of investing in a brand new pair of headphones. The modular design of the TMA-2 series is a significant advantage, as it allows users to customize and adapt their headphones according to their evolving needs, ensuring longevity and versatility in the gear they choose to use.
On the other hand, if you're in the market for new DJ headphones, you'll need to be convinced of the wireless advantage. The decision to go wireless should be based on your specific performance style and preferences. If you find that the freedom of movement and the lack of cables is essential to your DJing experience, then the TMA-2 DJ Wireless headphones could be a worthwhile investment. However, if you are more inclined towards traditional wired headphones, you might consider AIAIAI’s excellent TMA-2 DJ headphones, which are priced between £99 and £159. These wired options provide exceptional sound quality and comfort, allowing you to save the difference in cost for additional gear, such as a pair of high-quality noise-cancelling everyday wireless headphones for casual listening.
Additionally, if you are exploring traditional DJ headphones within this price range, there is strong competition from reputable brands like V-Moda, particularly with their M-100 model, which is well-regarded for its robust build and impressive audio performance, making it a worthy alternative to consider.
On the other side - what truly concerns us is that not just headphones, but other DJ equipment from AlphaTheta, are becoming significantly more expensive compared to other brands in the market. As consumers, we're often investing our hard-earned money without much thought. Many of us don't even consider why we're spending so much or whether we actually need these products. It has become a trend to upgrade gear without any real understanding. Isn't that so? Think about it and share your thoughts in the comments. 😉
