Course Overview

Embark on your DJ journey with DJ Training Academy's signature Beginner DJ Course, curated specifically for novices, those are ready and eager to explore the art of DJing. Our course covers all the essential skills you need to kickstart your DJ career, from beat-matching to mixing and beyond. During this comprehensive course, you'll learn the fundamentals of DJing in a supportive and engaging environment. Our expert instructors will guide you through each step of the process, ensuring that you develop a strong foundation in DJ techniques.

We Recommend

We provide all the necessary equipment and software during your training sessions at our studio. You don't need to worry about additional costs for hardware or software – everything you need is included in the course fee.

However, we recommend that our students consider setting up a basic DJ workstation at home to practice and reinforce their skills outside of class. A typical and a basic DJ workstation includes a PC or laptop, a pair of active DJ monitors or any speakers that are audible enough and dont have latency issues, a DJ controller or CDJs/XDJs, and professional-grade DJ headphones.
 
By setting up your own DJ workstation, you'll have the freedom to practice whenever you want, allowing you to progress more quickly in your DJing journey. Plus, having your own setup will enable you to complete assignments more effectively and make the most of your training.

Course Schedule

The Beginner DJ Course consists of a total of 16 classes spread over 2 months, with 2 classes held each week. Each session is a personalised 1-on-1 training session lasting 1.5 hours, ensuring focused attention and tailored instruction for each student. Please note that session availability may vary and is subject to scheduling constraints.

You May Require

When you join us at DJ Training Academy for your DJ course training sessions, all the necessary equipment will be provided. However, for your home practice sessions, you'll need the following:

  1. DJ Gear: For beginners, we suggest starting with an entry-level DJ controller from brands like Pioneer [Alfa Theta], Native Instruments, Roland, Denon, Hercules, etc. You can consult our faculty for recommendations on a student DJ starter kit at the best available pricing.

  2. DJ Headphones: While any DJ headphones will suffice, we highly recommend Sennheiser HD Plus DJ Headphones or VModa Crossfade DJ Headphones for optimal performance.

  3. DJ Software: Most basic DJ controllers come with accompanying software. Learning on any software is acceptable as they are generally similar. We recommend software such as Rekordbox, Traktor, Serato, or EngineDJ.

  4. PC or Laptop: Ensure your device meets the following bare minimum specifications:

  •    For Mac: OS 10.15, 11, 12, 13, or the latest version; Intel Core i5 or Apple M1 (with Rosetta 2); 8GB RAM; 500GB SSD.

  •    For Windows: Windows 10, 11; Intel Core i5 or equivalent CPU; 8GB RAM; 500GB SSD.

 
Having the right equipment at home will enhance your practice sessions and accelerate your progress as you embark on your DJing journey.

Welcome to the Phase 1 of the Beginner DJ Course, where we'll lay the foundation for your journey into the exciting world of DJing.

  • We'll kick things off by deep diving into power fundamentals of signal flow, ensuring you grasp the technical aspects crucial for seamless performances.

  • Understanding dance music and music structure will be pivotal, as we dissect the anatomy of tracks in Ableton Live, a music production software, where you will be explained of basics on how the dance music is made and what are the element blocks to make a fine dance music track. By this we try to bring your ears and brain in-sync so that you can recognise Kick, Snare & all the essentials that will help you ear-train and beat-match in further lessons of our Beginner Dj Course.

  • Moving on, we'll acquaint you with DJ Software, where you'll learn the ins and outs of this versatile software, mastering its functionalities to unleash your creativity. Alongside software, we'll delve into DJ Hardware, providing hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment. Hardware and software connections will be thoroughly explored, demystifying the intricacies of setting up your DJ setup for optimal performance. Software preferences and settings will be fine-tuned to your liking, allowing you to tailor your setup to your unique style and workflow. 

  • You'll discover the right way to connect and power on/off your gear, ensuring smooth operation every time you hit the decks.

By the end of this phase, you are all set to use any DJ booth like a pro, no matter where you go in the future. You'll learn everything you need to know to handle the DJ console confidently.

Welcome to the Phase 2 of the Beginner DJ Course, where we'll dive deeper into essential techniques to elevate your DJing skills to the next level.

  • We'll begin by exploring cue and play/pause functionalities. You'll learn how to catch a beat and set up hot cues manually, allowing you to pinpoint key moments in your tracks with precision.

  • Counting BPM and detecting a track's correct tempo will be a breeze as we introduce techniques to gauge BPM within a minute or even just 15 seconds. This will be done manually with the help of a stopwatch.

  • Next, we'll focus on optimizing your use of DJ headphones, ensuring you understand the proper and professional way to utilise this essential tool.

  • Cue release & beat matching manually will be a highlight of this phase, where you'll uncover the real art behind synchronising beats with help of your ears. You'll learn the intricacies of cue release on the beat and master the technique of nudging the jog wheel and adjusting the tempo fader to perfectly match the beats of two songs.

By the end of this phase, you'll have honed your skills in beat-matching and developed the proficiency to seamlessly blend tracks, setting the stage for captivating DJ performances.

Welcome to the Phase 3 of our Beginner DJ Course, where we'll delve into advanced concepts to deepen your understanding and enhance your DJing prowess.

  • We'll start by dissecting tracks and exploring the intricacies of bars and different phrases, such as the Intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, and outro. Understanding these elements is essential for creating seamless transitions and maintaining the flow of your mixes.

  • You'll learn to count beats, bars, and phrases with precision, laying the foundation for mastering the concept of bars or phrase mixing, commonly referred to as baring.

  • Next, we'll explore the sync function, empowering you to leverage this powerful tool effectively. You'll discover how to use the sync mode to enhance your DJing experience, allowing you to do more while performing. Mastering the master clock will be crucial for maintaining synchronisation across your setup, ensuring flawless transitions between tracks.

  • Finally, we'll dive into the basic beat gridding technique, a fundamental skill for aligning tracks accurately within your DJ software. You'll learn the ins and outs of beat gridding, enabling you to manipulate tracks with precision and confidence.

By the end of this phase, you'll have a solid grasp of advanced concepts like bar mixing, sync function, and beat gridding, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to take your DJing to the next level.

Welcome to the Phase 4 of our Beginner DJ Course, where we'll dive into DJ techniques, tips, tricks and tools to further refine your DJing skills and elevate your performances.

  • We'll begin by exploring Loops, including Single 4 Beat Loops, loop jumps and mastering the art of storing loops and editing in/out points in CDJs. Understanding loops is crucial for adding creativity and dynamics to your mixes, and you'll learn how to seamlessly integrate them into your sets for maximum impact.

  • Next, we'll delve into the basic use of sample decks and stem decks, unlocking new possibilities for adding layers and textures to your mixes.

  • Understanding features like snap, quantize, slip, flux, and reverse mode will further expand your toolkit, allowing you to manipulate tracks with precision and flair.

  • In addition, we'll explore some clever DJ techniques of visual Mixing with the phase meter and parallel deck mode in Dj softwares. These tools will empower you to create seamless transitions and keep the energy flowing on the dance floor.

  • Understanding the mixer, including the use of channel faders and cross faders, is essential for blending and fading between tracks with finesse. You'll also learn basic EQ controls to enhance your transitions and create smooth fade-ins and fade-outs.

  • Furthermore, we'll delve into using DJ mixer effect parameters effectively, including filters, to add depth and excitement to your mixes. You'll discover different types of DJ mixer transitions and learn how to execute them with precision and style.

  • We'll start by diving into organising dj playlists, teaching you how to categorise your smart playlists effectively and rating your tracks will streamline your workflow, ensuring you can access and select the perfect tracks for any moment during your set with ease.

  • Next, we'll explore different types of DJ transitions, equipping you with a diverse range of techniques to keep your mixes fresh and engaging.

  • Understanding software like Mixed in Key will revolutionise your mixing approach, enabling harmonic mixing and mastery the Camelot Wheel for seamless key transitions.

  • You'll also learn how to record and structure a demo mix, ensuring your mixes are well-crafted and professionally executed. We'll cover techniques for checking levels to ensure optimal recording quality.

  • As you progress, you'll have the opportunity to plan and perform a DJ set, putting your newfound skills into practice in a live setting.

  • Additionally, we'll touch on basic microphone skills, teaching you how to use a microphone effectively to engage with your audience and add another dimension to your performances.

By the end of this phase, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and skills to curate unforgettable DJ sets, blending tracks harmonically, executing flawless transitions, and captivating audiences with your unique style and flair.
